Detection of edema in porcine carotid arteries using t2-weighted cardiovascular magnetic resonance

چکیده
Introduction Arterial wall inflammation destabilizes atherosclerotic plaques and makes them prone to rupture (1) so detection of inflammatory activity may therefore assist discrimination between unstable and stable plaques. Inflammation of the vessel wall prompts transport of excess fluid into the interstitial space and results in the formation of edema (2). Hence, edema located within the vessel wall can be used as a marker for inflammatory activity.

Imaging of carotid artery vessel wall edema using T2-weighted cardiovascular magnetic resonance
BACKGROUND Atherothrombosis remains a major health problem in the western world, and carotid atherosclerosis is an important contributor to embolic ischemic strokes. It remains a clinical challenge to identify rupture-prone atherosclerotic plaques before clinical events occur. Inflammation, endothelial injury and angiogenesis are features of vulnerable plaques and may all be associated with pla...
متن کاملDetermination of Edema in Porcine Coronary Arteries by T2 Weighted Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance
BACKGROUND Inflammation plays a pivotal role in all stages of atherosclerosis. Since edema is known to be an integral part of inflammation, a noninvasive technique that can identify edema in the coronary artery wall may provide unique information regarding plaque activity. In this study, we aimed to determine whether edema induced in porcine coronary arteries by balloon injury could be reliably...
متن کاملUltra-short echo time cardiovascular magnetic resonance of atherosclerotic carotid plaque
BACKGROUND Multi-contrast weighted cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) allows detailed plaque characterisation and assessment of plaque vulnerability. The aim of this preliminary study was to show the potential of Ultra-short Echo Time (UTE) subtraction MR in detecting calcification. METHODS 14 ex-vivo human carotid arteries were scanned using CMR and CT, prior to histological slide prepa...
متن کاملMagnetic resonance imaging of feline eye
The purpose of this study was to investigate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the normal feline eyeand optic nerves using T1-weighted and T2-weighted images. A total of 6 healthy female domestic short haircats age 2-2.5 years and weighing 3.2 ± 0.4 kg were selected. Magnetic resonance imaging data werecollected using GEMSOW (Philips) at a magnetic field strength of 1.5 T. Dorsal, sagittal, a...
متن کاملEvolving focal cerebral ischemia in cats: spatial correlation of nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, cerebral blood flow, tetrazolium staining, and histopathology.
The spatial correlation of nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI) and cerebral blood flow (CBF) may improve our ability to identify ischemic brain lesions and may provide further insight into the pathophysiology of early cerebral ischemia. Eleven pentobarbital-anesthetized adult cats underwent exposure of the common carotid arteries bilaterally and the right middle cerebral artery through a ...
